How I Work With AI Coding Agents as a Senior Engineer
The software engineering landscape has shifted dramatically over the past two years. We went from writing every semicolon by hand to orchestrating multiple autonomous AI agents that can generate entire features, unit tests, and refactors in seconds.
Yet, counterintuitively, senior engineering judgment matters more today than ever before.
1. Speed Is Nothing Without Direction
When an AI coding agent can draft 500 lines of code in 10 seconds, the bottleneck is no longer code generation. The bottlenecks are:
- Problem Definition: Are we building the right feature?
- Domain Boundaries: Does this code belong here or in an isolated domain?
- Quality Verification: Does it handle network edge cases, rate limits, and memory leaks?
"Agents write code fast. My job is to decide what is worth building and keep it fast, lean, and reliable on every screen."
2. The AI-First Session Pattern
In my daily work, I treat AI agents like highly capable junior-to-mid engineers who need crystal-clear specifications:
- Context Loading: Give the agent strict boundary files (
CLAUDE.md, domain READMEs, architectural decisions). - Atomic Tasks: Ask for one contiguous, reviewable change rather than a sprawling rewrite.
- Verification First: Run lint, tests, and syntax parsers immediately after generation.
- Permanent Memory: Require the agent to record decisions in
DECISIONS.mdand log progress inSESSION_LOG.md.
3. Architecture Over Generation
An agent will happily duplicate utility functions across five files if you let it. A human architect ensures:
- Domain logic remains strictly separated.
- Shared infrastructure is minimal and pure.
- Assets, dependencies, and bundle sizes are kept lean.
By combining the raw speed of AI agents with rigorous architectural discipline, we can ship high-quality products in days that previously took months.
